UCGP supports fiber-reinforced precast tunnel segment requirements where production stages, handling, erection, service loads, crack control and specified residual performance must be coordinated with repeatable plant supply.

Design for production, construction and service stages

Precast segmental linings are assembled into rings behind a tunnel-boring machine and may be exposed to different demands before and after installation. Segment stripping or demoulding, lifting, storage, transportation, handling and erection can create transient stresses. Thrust-jack forces, grouting, ground and groundwater pressures, surcharge and other service-stage loads are project-specific.

Distributed fibers may be considered to improve post-crack behaviour and crack-width control when the segment design and material testing support that role. Some designs use fibers alone for defined actions; others use a hybrid system of fibers with reinforcing bars where localized forces or other design requirements remain.

Match the fiber function to the segment design

A tunnel segment specification may involve structural/post-crack reinforcement, fire-spalling mitigation, conventional bars or a combination. These functions should not be merged into one generic fiber claim.

Hooked-end steel fiber

Residual-performance route

Hooked-end steel fibers may be evaluated for distributed post-crack capacity, toughness and crack control. Geometry, tensile properties, dosage, orientation and concrete response require project-specific qualification. Macro synthetic fiber

Polymer macrofiber route

Macro synthetic PP/polyolefin fibers may be considered where the design and project approvals allow them. Residual response, long-term behaviour, fire strategy and production performance require product-specific evidence. UCGP lists macro synthetic fiber as Available on Request.

Microsynthetic PP

Separate fire-spalling function

Microsynthetic polypropylene fibers may be specified in some tunnel concretes for fire or explosive-spalling mitigation. This is a different function from the structural/post-crack role of steel or macro fibers. The project fire strategy and specification govern.

Repeatable segment production is part of the system

Concrete and geometry

Concrete strength, aggregate, workability, segment thickness, openings, inserts and reinforcing congestion influence flow, orientation and distribution.

Batching and mixing

Dosing equipment, mixing sequence, mixing time and batch records should support consistent fiber addition without clumping or uncontrolled variability.

Handling and finish

Trials should observe mould filling, edges, formed surfaces, demoulding, lifting and stacking rather than relying on a laboratory material value alone.

Testing and acceptance

Beam, panel, segment or full-scale tests may be required by the project. Test age, specimen preparation, sampling frequency and acceptance criteria must be defined.

Confirm the project-specific performance basis

ASTM C1116/C1116M provides a specification framework for fiber-reinforced concrete. ASTM C1609/C1609M evaluates flexural performance and residual strengths using beam testing. ACI 544 guidance includes design with fiber-reinforced concrete, and ACI PRC-544.7 addresses the design and construction of fiber-reinforced precast concrete tunnel segments across production, construction and service load cases.

These references do not establish that one fiber is appropriate for every segment or that fibers automatically replace reinforcing cages. Applicable design codes, test methods, durability and fire requirements, fiber documentation and acceptance criteria must be confirmed for the specific tunnel system.
