Ground-support context

Fiber-reinforced shotcrete is one part of a designed support system

Shotcrete can conform to irregular excavation profiles and may be used in underground openings, tunnel linings, mining ground support, slopes, soil-nailed walls and repair work. Steel or macro synthetic fibers can distribute reinforcement through the sprayed concrete and contribute to post-crack load transfer, toughness or energy absorption when the mixture and placement process achieve the specified response.

Fibers alone do not make an excavation safe. Ground conditions, excavation sequence, bolts or anchors, drainage, shotcrete thickness, early strength, bond, construction controls and the overall engineering design govern the support system. A generic fiber dosage is not a ground-support design.

Fiber pathways

Match the reinforcement to performance and process

Steel macrofibers and macro synthetic fibers can both be used in fiber-reinforced shotcrete, but they differ in stiffness, density, anchorage, handling and long-term behaviour. Selection and dosage are product- and project-specific.

Steel fibers may be selected where the ground-support or lining design requires defined toughness, energy absorption or residual response. Geometry, tensile properties, dosage, mixing and placement all influence performance. Polymer macrofiber route

Macro synthetic PP/polyolefin fibers may be considered where the support design and project approval permit them. Pumping, long-term behaviour, temperature or fire exposure and the required toughness response need product-specific review. UCGP lists macro synthetic fiber as Available on Request.

Microsynthetic PP

Separate fresh-state or fire objective

Microsynthetic fibers may be specified for early-age crack control, cohesion or fire-spalling mitigation in some systems. They should not be presented as the same structural/post-crack reinforcement function as steel or macro synthetic fibers.

Placement and quality

Wet-mix and dry-mix shotcrete require process-specific review

Dosing and mixing

The addition point, mixing sequence, equipment and batch records should support uniform dispersion. Fiber clumping or inconsistent dosage can undermine the intended response.

Pumping and spraying

Mixer, pump, hose, nozzle, accelerator, production rate, orientation and overhead work influence placement. Wet- and dry-mix systems do not use identical controls.

Rebound and finish

Rebound depends on the mixture, fiber, equipment, nozzle technique, surface and application conditions. UCGP does not claim reduced rebound without product- and project-specific evidence.

Testing and inspection

Panel, beam or other project-specified tests may be used to assess toughness or residual response. Sampling, curing, test age and acceptance criteria should be defined before routine production.

ACI PRC-506.1 describes fiber-reinforced shotcrete technology with emphasis on steel and synthetic macrofibers, including mixture proportioning, batching, mixing, application, post-cracking performance, testing, specification and quality control. ACI 544 guidance addresses fiber-reinforced concrete materials and design, while ASTM C1116/C1116M provides a specification framework that includes fiber-reinforced concrete and certain dry-mix shotcrete contexts.

Other beam or panel test methods may be required by the project, authority or ground-support design. A cited standard does not mean every quoted fiber automatically meets every requirement. The product documentation, mixture, support criteria and required test method must be confirmed for the specific application.

Important limitations

Do not reduce a support system to one fiber claim

Safety and design

Fiber-reinforced shotcrete must be integrated into the engineered ground-support or lining system. Fibers do not replace geotechnical assessment, bolts, anchors, mesh or other measures unless the approved design establishes that solution.

Dosage and performance

No universal dosage is suitable for every mine, tunnel or slope. Ground response, shotcrete thickness, concrete properties, fiber type and specified toughness or residual criteria govern.
